Welcome To Spring: 'Nor'easter Hits Huntington

Effects of the fourth nor’easter to hit Long Island this month were felt in Huntington as Wednesday wore on.

Streets in Huntington village started the day cleared, but snow began to accumulate as the morning progressed. By the mid-afternoon, plows began making regular passes through the village streets.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for Huntington, and the rest of Long Island, that was expected to remain in effect until 6 a.m. today.

Forecasts as of deadline early Wednesday called for 12-15 inches of snow for most of Long Island, and up to 18 inches in certain areas.

Huntington Supervisor Chad Lupinacci and Highway Superintendent Kevin Orelli planned to update members of the media on the storm from the town’s highway yard Wednesday afternoon.

A media advisory for the press conference said that near white-out conditions were expected, along with power outages, coastal flooding, and high winds, resulting in downed trees and power lines.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo also addressed members of the media Wednesday from the state’s service station along the Long Island Expressway in Dix Hills. The governor declared a state of emergency for both Nassau and Suffolk counties.

“Welcome to spring,” he said before giving an update on the storm.
