The Town of Huntington is accepting donations of supplies for victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, Councilwoman Tracey Edwards announced Tuesday.

“We, here in the Town of Huntington, are always standing ready to help as many people as we can,” Edwards said during a press conference announcing the effort. Edwards was joined by Ed Perez, of the Long Island Hispanic Business Roundtable, and Rosa Moya, representing Latinos Unidos de Huntington, in urging community support of the effort.

Perez said the Long Island Business Roundtable has partnered with the town to support the effort.

“By way of information I received from family in Puerto Rico, there is still a lot of relief that is needed,” Perez said.

The town has partnered with Liberty Moving & Storage in Commack, which will bring donated supplies to a central facility in Hauppauge. From there, the New York National Guard will ensure the supplies reach Puerto Ricans in need.

The specific supplies most needed by the hurricane victims are bottled water, batteries, flashlights, portable lanterns, diapers, baby wipes and feminine hygiene products.

Supplies can be dropped off at the Huntington Opportunity Resource Center (1264 New York Ave., Huntington Station) between 9 a.m-5 p.m. on weekdays. The drive will continue until supplies are no longer needed.

Those looking to make monetary donations can log on to the town’s website, Huntingtonny.gov, and click on the link to the Red Cross, through which donations can be specifically earmarked for Hurricane Maria victims.
