Donations Being Accepted To Aid Families Displaced By Fire

A Huntington councilman and Suffolk legislator have partnered with local agencies to aid the five families displaced by a fire that tore through several town house units at Bull Calf Landing in Centerport last week.

Councilman Mark Cuthbertson said the “fire’s devastating impact” has taken a toll on the families, some of which include young children.

No one was killed in the fire, but the residents “truly escaped this disaster with only the clothes on their backs and there is so much help and assistance that is needed,” said Cuthbertson, who has partnered with Suffolk Legislator William “Doc” Spencer and representatives of Coldwell Banker of Huntington, the Centerport Fire Department and Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Parish in Centerport.

“Regardless of how well someone is insured, the funds typically do not arrive right away despite the dire and immediate need,” Cuthbertson added.

To assist the families, a call has been put out for donations of gift cards to Old Navy, Target, Kmart, Value Drugs, CVS, or any local supermarket; kids or adult clothing stores; a local restaurant, pizzeria or fast food restaurant; or for American Express gift cards. They can be dropped off at four locations through Sunday, Feb. 26:

• Huntington Town Hall, 100 Main St., Huntington

• Legislator William Spencer’s office, 15 Park Circle, Suite 209, Centerport

• Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Parish, 50 Prospect St., Centerport

• Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, 82 Main St., Huntington

“It is also important to add that we are currently planning a fundraiser to take place within the month of February in Greenlawn – date, time and location will be announced soon,” Cuthbertson added.

Legislator Spencer said he is thankful for the community’s effort to “assist in building a bridge for these families, from this time of loss and destruction to a place of renewed stability and security.”
