Cops Find Waldo After He Flees Stop
/A Florida man is facing charges after he allegedly ran from a traffic stop in South Huntington and trespassed on the grounds of Walt Whitman High School during his retreat, Suffolk County Police said.
The 24-year-old, identified by police as Dorian Waldo, allegedly ran from his rental car and onto school grounds following a 2:07 p.m. traffic stop. Police said they later found him hiding in a car at an automotive business on Jericho Turnpike.
The search for Waldo complicated Walt Whitman High School’s student dismissal on Wednesday. Police advised school officials “literally two minutes before high school dismissal” to keep students and staff in the building and hold buses “while they concluded police business that was in the area,” South Huntington Superintendent Dave Bennardo said.
“The police then informed us that it was OK to dismiss students and staff, but moments later asked that we again hold dismissal while they concluded their work,” Bennardo wrote in a message to parents posted on the school district’s website Wednesday afternoon.
Students were dismissed at 2:25 p.m., Bennardo said.
The man from Florida was charged with Driving without a Driver’s License, Unlawful Possession of Marijuana, Criminal Trespass, and Resisting Arrest, police said.
