Northport’s 12th annual Art in the Park Festival will return to feature an array of local artists on July 11 in Northport Village Park at the Harbor.
The event has served as a source of summer entertainment and exposure for local artists since it was established in 2003 by the Northport Arts Coalition. It has grown from having only 14 artists that first year to include 30 craft stands, four musical acts, and two featured poets and an open-mic session this year. Hand-made fine art, photography pieces, graphic art, pottery, jewelry, handcrafted tools, and one-of-a-kind refurbished, spackled, and painted furniture will be for sale.
Children will also have the opportunity to participate in an art workshop, with informal instruction in painting and sculpture.
The event, which starts at 10 a.m., will have live musical and dance performances, as well poetry readings, from noon to 5 p.m. Middle Eastern Dancers from Inner Spirit Yoga Center in East Northport and featured poets Robert Savino and Gladys L. Henderson will perform their own pieces.
Artists chosen to be featured in the festival had to submit three hand-made pieces of artwork, and are mostly Long Island residents, said event organizer Lauren Paige.
“It’s a great day to see the artisans with their individual crafts on display, the music, the dance, and the poetry,” says Lauren Paige, “A variety of arts are going to be celebrated that day, so it’s kind of an exciting day.”
