A man was fatally struck by a car Monday afternoon while crossing Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station.

 

34-Year-Old Killed While Crossing Jericho Turnpike

A 34-year-old Philadelphia man was fatally struck by a car Monday while crossing Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Suffolk police said.

Vitaliy Yaremchuk was northbound, crossing Jericho Turnpike west of Hunters Lane, when he was struck at around 2:15 p.m. by a 2001 Buick traveling eastbound that was driven by a 20-year-old Huntington woman.

Yaremchuk was brought to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the car was not injured and remained at the scene.

Her vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation in continuing.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call the Second Squad at 631-854-8252.

Pickup Truck Burns Up In Melville: FD

Firefighters battle a pickup truck that went up in flames in a Melville parking lot last week.

A pickup truck went up in flames in Melville last Thursday, fire officials said.

The truck was fully involved when Melville fire crews arrived to the lot of Estee Lauder off of Corporate Center Drive at around 11:10 a.m., according to fire officials.

Firefighters “quickly extinguished the blaze” and there were no injuries reported.

Two engines and an ambulance were dispatched to the scene and were under the direction of Chief Jason Bernfeld and Third Assistant Chief Bill Schmitt.

FD: Driver OK After Truck Crashes Into Melville Pole

A commercial truck struck a utility pole in Melville last Thursday, according to fire officials.

The Melville Fire Department initially responded at around 1:50 p.m. to the scene on reports of the downed utility pole and wires, and found that the truck had struck the pole.

The driver wasn’t injured and was able to self-exit from the wreckage, but the cab of the truck was destroyed.

Assistant Chiefs Chris Nolan and Bill Schmitt were on the scene, and PSEG was notified.

 

Firefighters Injured While Battling South Huntington Blaze

Three firefighters were injured Saturday while battling a blaze in a South Huntington home, fire officials said.

The Huntington Manor Fire Department responded to the Alpine Way home at around 4 p.m.

The fire was on the first floor of the home, which was undergoing renovations.

Huntington Manor firefighters began battling the fire and were assisted by the Dix Hills and Greenlawn fire departments. Melville Fire Deparment provided standby coverage during the alarm.

The Huntington Community First Aid Squad treated three firefighters at the scene for minor injuries.

Around 50 firefighters using seven trucks had the blaze contained within 25 minutes.

Units were under the direction of Huntington Manor Chief Mike DePasquale, and supported by assistant chiefs Jon Hoffmann, Chuck Brady and Jim Glidden. Suffolk Fire Rescue Coordinators were also on the scene providing assistance.

The Suffolk Police Arson Squad and Huntington Town Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the fire.

Huntington Man Faked Kidnapping For Money, Nassau Cops Say

A 31-year-old Huntington man was arrested Friday for telling his mother he had been kidnapped and begging her to send money, according to Nassau police.

Michael Sorbera sent his 62-year-old mother text messages stating that he was in trouble, according to Nassau detectives. The woman later got a call from an unknown man using Sorbera’s cell phone. She was directed to wire money to Western Union in her son’s name. The caller also threatened to physically harm the woman and her son if she did not comply.

During this phone call, Sorbera stated he had been kidnapped and begged his mother to send money, police said.

The woman, of Elmont, reported the incident to police, who located Sorbera at his Huntington residence, determined he had not been kidnapped and was not in danger. Sorbera was arrested at around 7:45 a.m.

Sorbera was charged with second-degree grand larceny and fourth-degree conspiracy.

He was arraigned Saturday at First District Court in Hempstead and bail was set at $5,000 cash, $10,000 bond, which wasn’t posted, according to court records. Sorbera, who is being represented by a legal aid, is next scheduled to appear in court July 21.

Car Burns Up On Expressway

Firefighters needed 750 gallons of water and foam to extinguish a car fire on the Long Island Expressway in Dix Hills on July 4, fire officials said.

The Dix Hills Fire Department responded to the scene in the westbound lanes of the expressway, just west of Commack Road, at around 7 p.m.

There were no injuries reported, but the blaze intensified when the gas tank ruptured.

Three engines and two ambulances were dispatched and under the direction of assistant chiefs Joe Williamson and Brett Tepe.
