Suffolk Legislator Dr. William “Doc” Spencer came to the aid of Michele Ragusa, lead star of John W. Engeman Theater’s production of “Gypsy,” when the actress was having issues with her throat earlier this month.

Kevin O’Neill, co-owner of the John W. Engeman Theater, said Ragusa got through the Oct. 6 evening show, but was unsure if she could perform that Saturday and Sunday. She was concerned that she may do some damage to her vocal chords if she continued with her performances.

“We don’t want anybody to go on stage if they’re not in the position to, if they’re injured in any way or sick,” O’Neill said.

But, he added, “the show must go on,” and with many anticipating Ragusa’s performance, O’Neill took steps to try to get her back to full health.

He called Spencer, who visited the 250 Main St. theater before the Saturday matinee. Spencer met with Ragusa, prescribed her medicine and assured her she would not damage her voice.

“As a physician, I do want to help relieve people’s anxiety, pain and suffering, and this particular situation gave me a chance to address her concerns,” said Spencer, an ear, nose, throat and voice specialist. “We were able to put her in a position where she felt comfortable and I was proud to be able to do that for her and for the community. It was a feel good situation.”

Ragusa performed through the weekend and has been doing great ever since, O’Neill said.

He added, Spencer “was extremely generous with his time and care, and Michele was very grateful that we went to the extent of reaching out to someone like ‘Doc.’

“We’re very fortunate to have a guy like ‘Doc’ in the area.”
