Supervisor Declares Snow Emergency
/Button up your overcoat and batten down the hatches. With a blizzard warning in effect for a storm expected to start overnight, Huntington Supervisor Chad A. Lupinacci has declared a snow emergency effective at 12:01 a.m. January 4, and cancelled all Thursday activities and scheduled meetings at Town facilities.
“The forecast is for a significant storm, with difficult driving conditions and dangerous wind chills.” Lupinacci said. “Residents should stay off the roads, and make sure to park their cars off the streets to facilitate plowing and access for emergency vehicles.”
Under a snow emergency, the Supervisor has the power to close roads, appropriate necessary equipment from all sources and make necessary purchases without following usual procedures. The declaration makes available to the Highway Department equipment and personnel to assist Highway Department crews.
Among the cancellations is the regularly scheduled Zoning Board of Appeals meeting; it has been rescheduled for April 12.
All activities at town facilities are cancelled. These include programs at the Village Green Senior Center; Adult Day Care; all activities at the Dix Hills Ice Rink, Parks Department programs at local schools and at Coindre Hall; and all Youth Bureau programs.
Town Hall will be open, but with limited services. Call ahead (631-351-3234) to determine if a trip to Town Hall will be worthwhile.
The weekly recyclables pickup has also been cancelled. Residents should hold recyclables until the next scheduled pickup date, Wednesday January 10. Commercial pickups are still scheduled for businesses in Huntington Village and Huntington Station that have evening curbside collection. Check the Town’s website, Facebook page or Twitter feed for updates.
HART bus paratransit service is cancelled. A decision about fixed route service will be made in the morning.
Persons who want to report an emergency should call 631-351-3234. For Highway Department issues, including downed trees blocking roads, call 631-499-0444. Residents can also contact the Highway Department through the home page of the Town’s website, www.huntingtonny.gov, or by email at highway@huntingtonny.gov.
For further updates, check the Town’s website, Facebook page, Twitter feed or government access channels 18 (Optimum) or 38 (FiOS).
Residents are urged to stay home and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. “We want everybody to stay safe,” Lupinacci said.
