Update: 12-Year-Old Killed In Centerport Boating Accident, Cops Say
/A 12-year-old boy was killed Tuesday afternoon during a sailing lesson near the Centerport Yacht Club, Suffolk police and town officials said.
The boy was one of three students, each wearing life jackets, participating in the lesson on the water, Suffolk police said.
As part of the lesson, their boat was capsized. Two of the students stayed with the boat, while the 12-year-old boy was in the water, according to Suffolk Police Assistant Commissioner Justin Meyers.
The instructor pulled the boy from the water into his boat, however he fell out of the boat, police said.
Town of Huntington spokesman A.J. Carter said part of the boy’s life jacket got caught in the boat’s propeller, sucking him in. He suffered “multiple injuries,” Carter said.
The instructor pulled the boy from the water into his boat and performed CPR until EMTs arrived, police said.
Carter said a call reporting the accident came in to the town harbormaster at around 3 p.m. The Centerport Fire Department brought the boy to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
