With sweat on their brows and smiles on their faces, Commack’s varsity girls basketball team celebrated in triumph as the final buzzer went off, sealing a 51-50 victory over the Baldwin Bruins to become the 2014 Class AA Long Island Champions.

Three Cheers For The Cheerleaders!

The Walt Whitman High School varsity cheer team reaped the rewards of more than six months of dedicated practice, becoming the first cheer team in the school’s history to make it to the finals in the National High School Cheerleading Championship (NHSCC).

The team last week competed against the top 54 teams for the small varsity Division 1 category in the 2015 NHSCC preliminary round in Walt Disney World, Florida. They were one of 27 teams to advance to the semifinals and moved to the finals for the first time in Wildcats history. They went on to finish 17th in the nation.

Commack Fencing Ends Opponent’s 10-Year Winning Streak

Halfway through what has so far been “a successful season,” as its coach described it, the Commack High School girls fencing team has marked a milestone: a win over Ward Melville that marks the end of Ward Melville’s 195-game winning streak and has pushed Commack to the no. 1 spot in the league.

Until Commack’s team achieved the 14-13 victory on Jan. 6, Ward Melville had not lost a game in 10 years, Commack Coach Robert Raeihle said.

“Finally we’re moving out of the shadow of Ward Melville,” Raeihle said.

When it comes to 2014 accomplishments on the soccer pitch, St. Anthony’s High School is the bee’s knees.

Both the boys and girls teams were crowned New York State champions. Both teams were state champions in the same season for just the second time in school history. For the boys, the Friars repeated as state champs. Boys Head Coach Gene Buonaiuto earned his 400th career win. And the girls’ head coach, Dave Prutting, won his 21st state title and retired with a record of 437-46-19 over a 27-year career.
