John Glenn’s Lady Spiders volleyball squad added more hardware to an already-impressive trophy case as their dominance in the girls’ volleyball Class B division continued in 2013.
But their bid for a three-peat in the New York State Class B volleyball title, came up short, as the ladies were unable to emerge from pool play in the round-robin contest Nov. 15.
Elwood punched their card to the Glens Falls, N.Y. state finals with a 3-1 match set victory against Seaford in the Long Island Class B Championships Nov. 10. While Seaford won the first set 25-20, the Spiders surged back to win the title in straight sets after that with 25-18, 25-18 and 25-20 victories.
The Lady Spiders picked up the Suffolk County Class B title Nov. 6 after defeating East Hampton 3-1 [25-14, 25-22, 22-25 and 25-19]. Stephanie Viteritti finished with 32 assists, 23 digs, 6 kills and 2 aces to lead the undefeated Knights to the win, while Simi Familusi added 12 kills of her own.
At the Glens Falls Civic Center upstate, though, the Knights got off to a fast start with four straight wins in round-robin match play, knocking off Honeoye Falls-Lima 25-18 and 25-17 and Owego 25-23 and 25-19. However, they needed to win one of two games against Johnstown to lock up their berth, and were unable to do so, setting up a tiebreaker match for the final spot against Owego. This time, though, Owego was up to the task in preventing a three-peat sweep and knocked the Spiders out of the playoffs in a 25-16 final.
