The end of Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season, one filled with shopping, snow and family. Northport had two out of three of those things on Friday when the village kicked off the season with its annual tree lighting ceremony.

Spectators packed Northport Village Park as DJ Tommy Bruno played Christmas music and everyone waited in anticipation for the lighting of the tree and the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus. While they waited, attendees were able to socialize, listen to music, or even pet real reindeer. The Northport Chorale took their place on bleachers and began singing popular holiday songs that filled the park, causing everyone to sing along.

Then the moment everyone was waiting for arrived. Mayor George Doll started the countdown and finally the tree illuminated the night. Residents cheered and celebrated under the lights, but that was just the beginning. The fire truck alarms went off, signaling the arrival of Santa Claus.

Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived in their sleigh along with Frosty the Snowman, elves and the Grinch. After all the characters arrived, they walked around the crowd taking pictures with the children.

The event was beautifully put together, said Northport resident Carol Smith.

“Northport always puts on a great tree lighting” Smith said. “The chorale sounded amazing, the tree was beautiful, and holiday spirits were as high as ever.”

Smith, who has been attending the past couple of tree lightings, said that the event gets better each year.
