Sitting Monday in a cafeteria he hadn’t stepped foot in since he was a sixth-grader, 29-year-old Chris Strub was wide-eyed after giving a speech to campers of Project PLAY and St. John’s Camp in Huntington Station.

The camp, for low-income kids, hosted the Huntington Station native at his former elementary school, Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School, as a part of Strub’s mission to volunteer with a youth organization in every state across the country in just 100 days.

The son of a part-time home economics teacher and a prison warden, Huntington-based artist Andreas Rentsch grew up on a prison compound in Switzerland.

His most recent work explores questions of justice – a callback, he said, to his first 18 years.

“That obviously has shaped not only my life but also my work,” he said. “I was in close contact with many prisoners and that's also where a lot of empathy grew for the human conditions.”

Those efforts have produced Israel’s first novel, “The Global War On Morris,” a political satire on the Simon & Schuster imprint which, in many cases, is not ripped from the headlines per se, but a bird’s eye view of a Congressman, formed into a novel that’s due out Jan. 6.

Heckscher Welcomes ‘Experimental Photography’

Arranged on white walls at the Heckscher Museum of Art, photographs that look like paintings and etchings and drawings live next to frames displaying splashes of light and objects abstract and concrete. The exhibition is one of experimental photography – an art form within the photography field that is represented by the sect of photographers who practice “non-traditional” methods.

The Heckscher opened its “Modern Alchemy: Experiments in Photography” exhibition on Dec. 6. The two-gallery show begins with 20th-century works and travels up to present-day digital work, with the most recent works on display being images captured on the iPhone, Curator Lisa Chalif said.
