Knights Win In A ‘Golden Flash’

The Knights got off to a fast start in League VI in 2014, opening with a 56-17 win against the Sayville Golden Flashes Jan 10.

The John Glenn Knights’ 2014 wrestling campaign got off to a strong start Friday with a 56-17 win over Sayville in League VI competition.

The Knights made four pins in the victory, starting with Greg Witthuhn (106 lbs.) in 3:45. Chris D’Amico (126 lbs.) followed suit by pinning down his Golden Flashes adversary in 5:13, while Matt Porello (160 lbs.) made short work of his adversary in a 2:30 pin victory. Anthony Pino (285 lbs.) repeated the feat in his contest in 3:21. Tommy DiBenedetto (132 lbs.) secured his victory by technical forfeit, outpacing his opponent 15-3 by the 2:34 mark.

It’s the first league win for the Knights in 2014, a perennially strong force in League VI wrestling. But it’s hardly their first success on the mats this year.

At the Ted Murphy Shoreline Invitational in New Rochelle Jan. 4, Edwin Rubio brought first place home to Glenn in a 4-2 upset over a state finals placer Mike Manni of Tappan Zee. Also bringing home the gold for Glenn was 106-pound grappler Zach Ancewicz. Overall, 12 athletes were standouts – D’Amico and Dan Kohout (182 lbs.) were runners up in their division, while Sean Wieck (99 lbs.) and Derek O’Brien each won bronze. Witthuhn was fourth at 106 lbs. while Ian Cange and Pino were fifth in the 195 and 220 lb. classes, respectively. DiBenedetto, Porrello and Gill Bonilla (170 lbs.) also placed in the competition.

The Knights were scheduled to travel to challenge undefeated Shoreham-Wading River after press time Wednesday. Their next scheduled home meet is a 4 p.m. start against Amityville. They’ll travel to Miller Place Jan. 22 and host Mt. Sinai Jan. 24.
