Field Hockey Gets Fiesty

A Lady Tiger drives the ball down the field during the Sept. 28 home game against Walt Whitman.

With a record more impressive than seven other teams in League I, the Northport field hockey team is enjoying the view from atop this season.

The Lady Tigers (5-3) are fourth overall, just one win shy of tying for third and four wins shy of first-place Sachem East (9-0).

Northport swept the floor with Floyd at the Oct. 4 away game, which they won 3-0. Lady Tigers Noelle Peragine, Hailey Burke and Margaret Gardiner scored to top Northport over the Lady Colonials.

The girls team cowered a bit when they took on No. 2 Ward Melville (7-2) on Oct. 2. Their only loss of the week, Northport was defeated 1-0 by the second-place team.

Northport fared better during a tight game against Lindenhurst, where up until the middle of the second half, it could have been anyone’s game. Amanda Ferguson added one point for the home team and Margaret Gardiner scored a goal on a penalty stroke. The Lady Bulldogs snarled back with a goal in the second period, but the Lady Tigers walked away victorious with a one-point edge.

Northport is scheduled to play at Sachem North on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
