Commack Football Heads To Semifinals
Commack football continued its undefeated season on Saturday afternoon with a first-round Divison I playoff win against Brentwood.
The game was neck-and-neck until its last second. No. 1 Commack knew that No 8. Brentwood would not go down without a fight.
“We tried to prepare for Brentwood like we do every week and treat it as just another game and keep our mind off the fact that it was a playoff game,” senior fullback and line backer Jesse Kilmetis said.
Brentwood put up the first points of the game with a 19-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Commack did not return the score until the second quarter of the game.
With five minutes and 50 seconds left in the first half, senior quarterback Rob Paccione battled down the field and finished a 12-play drive with a 7-yard touchdown run for the Cougars. Billy Holscher’s extra-point kick was good, and the game was tied at 7 going into the second half.
The third quarter remained close, and with less than two minutes to go Paccione hit Kilmetis with a 14-yard pass in the back field. Kilmetis spun into a short run to the end zone to give Commack the 14-7 lead (with another extra-point from Holscher) and ultimately the 14-7 win.
“After scoring the winning touchdown I was pumped up and excited, but I had to get my focus back to defense quickly to ensure that we held the lead and didn’t get comfortable,” Kilmetis said.
The fourth quarter was full of action and remained scoreless due to the strong defensive efforts by both teams.
Commack cornerback Augie Contressa led the defense with 12 tackles. Kilmetis, Willy Monroy and Matt Recek each had an interception, and Kevan Scott had two sacks. Both Christian Costello and Mike Messinger had a fumble recovery for the Cougars’ defense.
The Cougars are now 9-0 this season. They will host No. 4 William Floyd in the semifinals on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m.
